Time to Pick Your Next Read, This Time by Mood by Alexia Wdowski

There are many ways to choose your next read, from prize-winner lists to books your friends recommend. However these can be jarring if you are not in the right mood.

Matching author to what you fancy reading in the moment can be tricky, if not downright impossible, especially is you lean towards the temperamental side of the page.

Choosing a book is sometimes better done by giving in and listening to your mood, even if you are faced with a cloth-bound should-have-read-you-already classic, or a whatever cool weird looking shit you find in the charity shop. Or even the current pretty cover in a favourite indie bookshop. 😊

So here are three recommendations for a most classic and timely emotion – Autumnal Despair!

Let’s go!

Book Recommendations for feeling sad

Ok you wanna go for something fluffy but not complete candyfloss. (Toothache will only add to the pain). Avoid proper existentialists at all costs and go for a more friendly reading experience including an ending you can see coming before you even open the book.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (Harper Collins, 2017)

Yes she is, no problems here. She might be even finer by the end of the book if all goes well. (spoiler alert, it does).

Everything is Beautiful by Eleanor Ray

Everything is Beautiful (Little Brown, 2021)

Hoarding has never been so romantic. Will make you save tiny china teacups for meaningful, personal reasons, and then, ultimately, let them all go…

The Midnight Library (Canongate Books, 2020)

A heart warming book about suicide, but guess what, she goes on to live at the the end.

So, okay there is a lot of sadness in this post. Hope you enjoyed it. Next time, join me for elation!
